Yoga Nidra has profound effect on both Psychological and physiological systems of human body and rejuvenates the systems many more times than the normal sleep. In addition to supplementing the normal sleep this is also a practice of meditation in its own right.
Meditation: Originally developed by our ancient Rishis for the purpose of spiritual attainment, variously called as samadhi , nirvana, self realization, Christ consciousness etc, this practice is also used, now-a-days, extensively as a curative/preventive method for the various so called incurable diseases such as Cardiac Problems. Yoga recognizes these ailments as psychosomatic in nature and so approaches them in an integrated manner treating both the psyche and the body simultaneously.
As a therapeutic process Yoga Nidra/Meditation has an edge over the modern medical practice. There is a growing realization, on the part of the modern medical profession, that there approach has limitations and hence we hear from media, doctors recommending Yoga for relief. Yoga aims at complete cure. The stalwarts in the medical profession acknowledge this without grudge.
The inner tensions of the individual contribute to collective psychological tensions, which can manifest in unhappy family life, chaos and disorder in social life and aggression and warfare between communities and nations. Law, police, armies and governments have been unable to establish harmony between people. The yogic texts all unequivocally state that peace can only be found within, never without. Therefore, if we wish to create a more peaceful world, we must first learn how to relax and harmonize our own body and mind and these three fold tensions (Physical, mental and emotional tension), which are responsible for all the agonies of modern life can be progressively released by practicing Yoga Nidra.
